I’ve been hosting Fro Friday on Instagram for a little over 1 year now. Every, single, Friday you see these words,
“Happy Fro Friday ya’ll!!! Pick those fros up & out and give them something to talk about!!” ~OlenaRosanne
Then I was had a follower advise that they couldn’t participate that Friday because they didn’t think their Afro Puff qualified as a “Fro Friday” hairstyle. That is, until I advised my fellow curlfriend that she was mistaken.
Let me explain.
My definition of Fro Friday is ANY style that allows your hair to flow free. Since Black hair naturally grows up and out. Any hair style that showcases how big your hair gets by the end of the week, is classified as Fro Friday Friendly.
Still Confused. Well here goes 4 Fro Friday looks that pass Fro Friday qualifications.
The Afro –
If you are anything like me I only style my hair once a week to cut down on strand manipulation. As we all have seen across social media your day 1 hair will look nothing like day 5 hair. The shape, height, body, and frizz of day 5 hair is perfect for Fro Friday. So if it’s curls, coils, or kinks, that has been picked out or an old twist-out or braid-out, that will do just fine. I doesn’t matter if frizz has taken over due to humidity, rain, or sweat. It will do nicely for Fro Friday.
The Afro Puff –
The afro puff ranges in size from small, medium, large, and extra-large depending on your length of hair. The puff itself doesn’t have to be picked out as we all picture in our heads. It can be curly, coily,
kinky, or enhanced with synthetic or human hair extensions. Using a rubber band to gather your puff is strongly discouraged. Try using a ribbon, a head band cut in half, or my favorite PuffCuff Original 5″. I suggest using the PuffCuff Original 5″ because
- its easy to use, comfortable
- won’t snag your hair
- and gives the appearance that you are working with more hair than you really have!
PuffCuff Original 5″ was a life-saver for me when my hair was in its awkward stage months after doing The Big Chop. I wanted to do an afro puff so bad and using anything else just looked ridiculous. I suggest giving it a try. They’re so versatile and come in multiple sizes!
The Frohawk –
This is a style that will turn heads where ever you go. It’s a play off of the mohawk which works great for straight hair. But we are talking
about Fro Friday hair so that hawk is going to of course be made with Fro Hair. You can secure your frohawk with bobby pins. Or you may opt to leave your hair out in the front and back and put a puff in the middle. Or better yet, secure your hair in 3 separate puffs down the middle of your head with 3 small Puff Cuff’s and fluff away!
The Fro Updo
So, it’s Friday night and you’re getting ready to go out, but want to switch up the style you’ve been wearing all week. Why not hook up a classy Fro Updo? Try cornrowing or flat-twisting the front, back or side of your hair then let the rest of your hair do its own thing.
Cornrows and flat-twists are perfect accents to your Afro Puff. Add a flower or loc jewelry and you are ready to go.
