Yesterday, I decided to take my youngest son on a outing to Harper’s Playground at Arbor Lodge Park. This park is located on the North side of Portland, Oregon. Honestly I had never heard of Harper’s Playground before last week, but I’m glad I decided to make the drive over. Read on to find out what’s so special about this park.
Resource Centers Are The Best!
Every so often I get email notifications from Swindells Resource Center which is located in the Providence Child Center- Portland, Oregon. Swindells Resource Center offers support to caregivers and parents of kids with and special needs, disabilities or developmental delays. The amount of information, training, and resources provided to families though-out the NW is amazing!
Anyway, the email was regarding an Inclusive Cycling Event sponsored by Swindells Resource Center at Harper’s Playground at Harbor Lodge Park. I thought this would be a great interactive way for my son to enjoy the summer in the outdoors.
Arbor Lodge Park is located in the north-side of Portland, Oregon. Harper’s Playground portion of the park was added in 2013 and according to the Harper’s Playground website their Mission is to:
And Vision is:
Everything about Harper’s Playground message is music to the ears of any parent or caregiver of a child with any special needs or developmental disability. Which is great because the world is not always supportive of our kids who just want to have fun and enjoy life like any other child.
Yesterday, Harper’s Playground was jam packed with smiling kids & adults sporting bike helmets and,
- riding bikes
- trying new activities
- playing on disability-friendly playground equipment
- dancing to live music
I gotta say, it was an amazing experience for all. No drama, and not a tear in sight. My son didn’t get to try any of the innovative bikes he wanted to because most were with other riders. But, he got a chance (tried) to ride an unicycle and even attempted to walk on stilts! Both new experiences for him. He also insisted on eating “Dirt” (chocolate) ice cream and multi-flavored Hawaiian shaved ice. So, he got his wish! Let me tell you, he was a happy camper, and when he is happy, I am happy!
